Learn from Start Ups

South Central isn’t a huge company.  We have over three hundred people in six states doing this and that.  Call it medium.  Still.  Not huge.

Huge companies are known for bureaucracy and people saying “that’s not my job”.  Cover Your Ass (CYA) was trade marked a long time ago by numerous governments and big companies.  You don’t want to be a government bureaucrat or soulless robot in a big blue box.

Yet, I get worried that this creeps into corners of South Central.  People point fingers and cackle at those who drop balls.  They say: “If only so and so wasn’t a dufus, we would be more successful.”  Sometimes they hide from saying or doing the right thing because it might be hard.  It might cause extra work for them to lend a hand or suggest a way to fix something.

We aren’t on this planet to do what is easy.  Success and happiness come from hard work, confidence, compassion, hunger, and commitment.  South Central is a successful company because people worked together and tried to figure out how to grow personally and professionally.  When someone would make a mistake or drop a ball, others were there to catch it; not point and laugh.  The only way to go forward in our medium company is together.

PS - To further illustrate my point, here is an excerpt from Andy Monfried’s Blog titled Value Creation in a Startup.  Be careful not to pigeon hole his writing to relating only to Internet startups.
